HEAD COACH RESUME:
Frederick Community College has hired Darryl Whiten as men’s basketball head coach, Director of Athletics Larry Johnston announced on September 27, 2021.
Coach Whiten is all about the complete student-athlete experience,” said Director of Athletics Larry Johnston. “He understands that ‘student’ comes first and he wants them to develop as young men and be successful.”
Whiten comes to FCC after six years at Tuscarora High School (Frederick, MD) where he roamed the sidelines as head coach for the boys basketball program, tallying an overall record of 80-39. While at Tuscarora, Whiten captured two sectional championships and two Region Runner-Up titles. Prior to his arrival at Tuscarora, Whiten served as Thomas Johnson’s head girls basketball coach for six seasons.
“I’m grateful, thankful, humbled, and appreciative of being named the men’s basketball Coach Frederick Community College,” said Whiten.
Whiten is no stranger to the Frederick area and is well-respected throughout the basketball community. He has a deep coaching resume that includes over 20 years of coaching and mentoring experience. As a three-year varsity basketball starter at Frederick High School, Darryl won numerous individual honors, including First Team All-City, FHS’ third all-time assist leader, two-time team captain, and in 1981 was named the Frederick Courier Male Athlete of the year. He was also an All-City & All-County selection.
Whiten went on to be a three-year starter at Clarion University and was named captain of the team his final two seasons. Additionally, Whiten was a two-time PSAC West first-team selection.
He returned to Frederick and got involved in coaching youth basketball camps and programs. He has coached at the high school level for many years and has been named several times by news outlets as Coach of the Year. He has been active in community service and is a motivational speaker for young athletes. In 2017, Whiten was inducted into the prestigious Frederick County Sports Hall of Fame.
“This program remains something the community can take pride in, and one of my first missions is to make sure we’re recognizable throughout the area,” Whiten said. “We want to give back to the community. When our student-athletes leave college, they’re going to be prepared for outside of athletics and have a good foundation to build when that happens.”
